BWhcSL | Round 2 Preview

The Betfred Wheelchair Super League returns this weekend as teams continue their journey to the 2026 Play-Offs.

Kicking off the weekend are Edinburgh Giants and Hull FC who face each other on Saturday (25 April, KO 2:30pm).

Both teams are looking for their first win in this year’s competition after each facing a 2026 Grand Finalist in the opening week.

This weekend guarantees a breakthrough as one team gets on the board and sets their season in motion.

Also facing off this Saturday are Halifax Panthers and Wigan Warriors (KO 3pm).

Both teams have started the season on impressive form, beating their first round opponent whilst also securing a spot in the Betfred Wheelchair Challenge Cup Semi-Finals.

The last time the pair met was back in September during round three of the 2025 play-offs.

The Panthers got the edge and headed into the Grand Final whilst the Cherry and Whites just missed out in third position.

This year they’re looking to close out the season just as strongly as they’ve started and make it back to the final for the first time since 2023.

Sunday brings two more battles as Sheffield Eagles meet Bradford Bulls (KO 1:45pm) whilst London Roosters host Leeds Rhinos (KO 2pm).

The Eagles are no longer Super League newbies, with 2026 marking year two in the competition.

This week they face debutants Bradford Bulls in their first meet as Super League sides since battling it out in the Wheelchair Championship:

“It’s a bit of a full circle moment this weekend. Our first win as a club in 2023 was in the Championship against Bradford so meeting them back in the Super League three years later, we’re hoping to do the same," said Sheffield Eagles’ Joe Wink-Simmonds.

“We’ve put a lot of hard work in the last few months, we’ve met some decent opposition at the start of this season in Wigan and London so we know what we’re up against.

“I’d like to think they’ve done their research on us, we’ve done ours on them. I think as players and as a squad, we’re pretty confident going into this weekend.”

Wink-Simmonds is one of four Sheffield Players named in the 2026 England Wheelchair National Performance Squad, a feat he is especially excited about with the World Cup at the end of the season:

“I spoke to Tom (Coyd MBE) a couple of months ago, he gave me a call to see what my feelings were about it and asked me if I wanted to join the squad and it was a pretty easy choice - I couldn’t say no!

“I think it’s just dedication to the hard work we’ve put in as a team. It’s a pretty good personal achievement, I only started playing the game a few years ago and now I’m essentially competing for a spot in the England squad in the World Cup.

“Super League is a world apart from the Championship, but the England squad is a world apart from Super League. It’s a phenomenal standard and I’m pretty happy to be part of it.”

London Roosters and Leeds Rhinos round out the weekend as they kick-off on Sunday at 2pm.

The pair have also had a great start to the season, featuring as the final two teams in the Betfred Wheelchair Challenge Cup Semi-Finals.

It’s set to be a hard-fought encounter this week, with neither side willing to give up their clean 2026 record.
